February 26, 2003 10:01 a.m. NOTICE: If you're here looking for wangitude, might I suggest an earlier entry of mine? Otherwise, we now return to our regularly scheduled entry, already in progress ... Okay, here's an obscure memory out of the blue: In the spring of 1984, I was in the fourth grade, and the school was running a talent contest. (I'm not sure what changed, but I don't recall my current aversion to public performance back then.) My friend Andy and I tried out, with a comedy routine. It bombed. What we didn't realize at the time, was that anyone that tried out would be a part of the show. The best kids from the tryouts had solo routines (dancing, singing, etc.), while the rest of us were lumped in to scrub-filled group productions. Andy got drafted into the "clown chorus", consisting of the proverbial shit-load of elementary-school kids dressed as clowns, and singing The Carpenters' "Sing". I was allocated to the "cane-and-top-hat group", and we danced up a storm to Sinatra's "Theme from New York, New York". I remember the show coming off somewhat well, and I had a lot of fun, but I'm sure it was typical elementary school crap. This memory is courtesy of the aforementioned song, "New York, New York", as I was singing it while cooking breakfast this morning, and I always fondly remember the way that I learned the lyrics. |
